Laser tops list again
Ford’s Laser regained top place on New Zealand's list of best-selling cars in May, ousting the Toyota Corolla, which was top in April. The Laser was in short supply in April but, with replenished stocks in hand, 807 Lasers were registered in May to be well clear of the 690 Corollas that were registered. Ford’s Telstar took third place with 606 registrations. Aided by the new Sierra station waggon which, with 246 registrations, was thirteenth on the list, Ford was over-all market leader for the fourth consecutive month, taking a 23.3 per cent share in May and a 21.3 per cent share for the year to date. Todd Motors, Mitsubishi assembler and distributor, was second in May with a 14.6 per cent share and then came Toyota with 14.1 per cent. The order following the Telstar in May was Honda Accord (558), Holden Commodore (500), Honda Civic (432), Mitsubishi Sigma (358), Mazda 323 (379), Nissan Sunny (369), Mazda 626 (350), Mitsubishi Mirage (335), Nissan Pulsar (260), Ford Sierra (246), Misubishi Tredia (211) and Mitsubishi Cordia (207). In Britain, sales to the end of June, at 943,868, were 2.4 per cent ahead of the corresponding 1983 period and the Ford Escort was the best-selling car.
