Submissions on treaty sought
PA Wellington The Race Relations Conciliator, Mr Hiwi Tauroa, has called for all Maori groups to prepare submissions on the Treaty of Waitangi for a national hui at Turangawaewae in September. The purpose of the hui was “to seek a collective expression from the Maori people — hapu, iwi, and other Maori organisations — concerning the Treaty of Waitangi,” he said. The hui was for all Maori people to make known what they thought of the treaty — how they felt about it now
and what they thought should be done in the future. “The call is to those who see that good has arisen from the treaty and to those who see disadvantages and injustice. It is important that both groups be represented,” said Mr Tauroa. “At the conclusion of the hui it will be possible to write down just what the Maori people do feel about the Treaty of Waitangi and how it affects them now," he said. Planning for the threeday hui from September 14 was well under way, he said.
