Lawda buoyed by win

NZPA-AAP Brands Hatch, England Niki Lauda, winner of Sunday’s British Grand Prix, is visibly enjoying his racing more than ever. “The older you get the

more you enjoy things. And I’m getting older," said Lauda, aged 33. The Austrian has beaten Scotland’s Jackie Stewart as all-time world championship points winner. The victory brought his total to 367.5 compared with the 360 Stewart won in taking three world titles. Lauda’s fellow McLaren team member, Alain Prost, who retired with gearbox trouble, has a total of 173.5 points. Lauda has said that Prost’s talent has given him new stimulation, and made him push his own talent to its limits. And he is visibly enjoying his racing more than ever.

Lauda agreed the race should have been stopped after 12 laps because three wrecked cars were in dangerous positions around the track. Prost said bitterly there was no need for the action and that races were stopped “only when Nelson Piquet is in trouble.” The Brazilian, who beat Prost last year for the title, had just been passed by Prost when the British event was halted. Prost also complained about the Detroit race being stopped after the first lap, when Piquet’s Brabham was wrecked'in a collision.
