Fishermen rescued from island

PA Auckland . Two Tongan. fishermen, rescued from an uninhabited island where they spent two weeks without water, arrived in Auckland > • on Wednesday evening. Messrs Sione Tupe, aged 49, and Sione Halatanu, aged 44, lived on pawpaws and coconuts. ~ They were spotted waving a white cloth from a clifftop, and were taken off the island, Ata, last Friday by a . freighter, the Tasi. They said that they had spent five days in an open boat and 10 days on the island on which their smlong boat was wrecked. They had set out from Eua on June 29 for a day’s fishing. The Royal New Zealand Air Force Orion had flown to Ata, 180 km south of Tongatapu, during a search that was abandoned on July 4. Mr Tupe, who has eight children, and Mr Halatanu ■,. who has five children, are 1 expected to return to Tonga tomorrow.
