Man remanded over stabbing incident

Two days in August have been set down for the taking of depositions in the case of a Greymouth man charged with attempted murder. Steve William Gugum, aged 44, a bridgeman (Mr M. J. Leggatt), who appeared before Judge Hay in the District Court, was remanded in custody to July 27. This was because he would not consent to a custodial remand until August 27. Gugum is charged with attempting to murder Veronica Norma Falconer on July 11.

The charge relates to a stabbing incident in a Richmond house. Mr Leggatt said that a psychiatric report indicated that Gugum was fit to plead. He said the complainant was recovering at an address unknown to his client In seeking bail, Mr Leggatt said Gugum would return to Greymouth, sureties presented no difficulty, and strict reporting conditions could be imposed. In view of the extreme gravity of the alleged offence, the Judge said that

MORPHINE CHARGES Two men facing charges involving an attempt to manufacture morphine were

remanded in custody to July 26 pending bail applications in the High Court They are Stephen Frank Coward, aged 33, a sickness beneficiary, and Brian lan Cameron, aged 29, unemployed. Both are represented by Mr E. Bedo. The two men are jointly charged with attempting to manufacture morphine, and with possessing utensils and other assorted laboratory equipment for this purpose. Cameron is also charged with allowing his Milton Street address to be used for the manufacturing of the drug.
