Aust. shipping ban
NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian maritime unions yesterday extended and tightened bans against foreign shipping as a dispute with the West Germanowned Columbus Line escalated. The 48-hour bans were imposed on all foreign-flag cargo ships, with the exception of New Zealand lines. Passenger ships are not affected. The move resulted from > *
the granting on Wednesday evening of a Federal Court temporary injunction against the unions under the secondary boycott provisions of the Trade Practices Act, restraining the unions from applying bans to Columbus Line ships. The Australian Chamber of Shipping estimated that at least 110 ships were trapped in ports round Australia, costing the industry more than $2 million a day.
