Statue to be unveiled

Ria Bancroft and her stone statue of the Virgin Mary which she has sculpted for St Mary’s Church in New Brighton. It will be officially unveiled by the Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby, after a dedication service tomorrow afternoon.

The statue will take pride of place in the church, which has undergone significant design changes in the last two years. Worshippers now sit broad-side in the rec-tangular-shaped building, in keeping with the emphasis on community worship.

The statue of Mary will be sited looking towards the new altar, cross, lectern, and baptismal font, all of which have been fashioned from timber from the old New Brighton pier by Mrs Bancroft, a fellow sculptor, Bing Dawe, and the Rev. Pat Crawford, parish priest of St Mary’s.
