STATE OF THE PARTIES
NB: On election night in 1981, National held 46 seats and Labour 44. However, an error in the vote count in Gisborne was discovered and the seat went to National with four votes to spare. This was confirmed in the final count, which gave National a 150-vote majority. Last year the number of Labour Party seats was reduced to 41, after two Labour members of Parliament, Mr John Kirk in Sydenham and MrBrian MacDonell in Dunedin Central, became Independent. The number of seats in the next Parliament was increased by three to 95 after the electoral boundary changes made last year.
