Botham snares eight

NZPA-Reuter London The all-rounder, lan Botham, recaptured the bowling form that made him, at one time, the world’s leading swing bowler to keep England very much in contention in the second cricket test against West Indies at Lord’s.

A revitalised Botham took eight for 103, his best test figures for six years, to give England an unexpected 41run first-innings lead.

At the close of play on the match’s third day, England, which dismissed West Indies for 245, was four for 114 in its second innings, a lead of 155. Viv Richards looked in prime form when the West Indies resumed at 119 for three, and he took his score to 72 before Botham trapped him lbw. But none of the other West Indian batsman could come to terms with Botham’s swing and movement off the seam. However, West Indies struck back immediately when England batted.

Chris Broad was caught at slip for no score, the captain, David Gower, was also caught in the slips for 21, and the first-innings cen-tury-maker, Graeme Fowler, was lbw for 11. Allan. Lamb (30 not out) and Mike Gatting added 52 for the fourth wicket before Gatting was lbw for the second time in the match for 29. It was left to Botham, who finished on 17 not out, to see out the day with Lamb. Botham needs only another 45 runs and five wickets to achieve the unique distinction of 4000 runs and 300 wickets in test cricket. ENGLAND First innings 286 Second innings G.
