NZPA-AAP Wimbledon

The Davis Cup player Pat Cash, the sole Australian survivor in the Wimbledon men’s singles, today faces a man with a mission in his fourth-round match. He meets the eleventh seed the United States-based South African, Kevin Curren, who is understood to have vowed to win the tournament for his father who died on Friday night. An emotionally-strained Curren accounted for the talented Indian, Ramesh Krishnan, the conquerer of Chris Lewis, in four sets, 62, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 while Cash overwhelmed the Brazilian, Cassio Motta, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.

Cash said he and Curren, who is coached by an Australian, Warren Jacques, had played three times with the South African having a 2-1 advantage. But the pair are one-all on grass. Curren, who last year blasted the then reigning champion, Jimmy Connors,

out of the fourth rourid with a barrage of aces, learned of the death of his father Ron, aged 51, late on Friday night.

Curren declined to hold a post-match press conference, but according to close confidantes he is unlikely to return to Durban for the funeral. It is expected that he will continue with Wimbledon and try to win it for his father.
