Forest exports
Sir,-It is time the likes of P. S. Grant (“The Press,” June 22) were tol& what the “poor underprivileged Coaster” doesn’t mean'when he “belabours” over his social
situation. We’re not burning with desire to be the richest in the street, with the nicest house and the newest car. We’re not growing ulcers over where to spend our holidays. We’re hardly breaking our backs to put the place on the map. But we do care about people who are cold and wet and hungry. The plight of “20,000” birds is nonsense if it means our children, the county’s future, are heading for unemployment and/or forced migration. You are worried about our birds — we’re worried about our people. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you created an environment of your very own for those birds. All you need are a few hundred thousand hectares of podocarps, water, and the resultant acidic reaction. Imagine what it would do for your own urbane environment. — Yours, etc.,
JANET GRAY. Reefton,
June 22, 1984.
