Beauty contest on T.V.
The “Miss Asia and Pacific” quest final, to be held in Christchurch on November 10, will be broadcast live by Television New Zealand. Eighteen countries, including Australia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka, will send representatives to the final at the Christchurch Town Hall.
The competition has run for 17 years, and this will be the first time it has been
held in New Zealand.
It will be organised in New Zealand by the South Island Film and Production Company. Mr Rex Simpson, a spokesman for the company, said negotiations were being held with five of the participating countries for direct satellite broadcast of the final, and with other countries for delayed coverage. Mr Simpson said the competition would be sponsored mainly by New Zealand
companies, although a number of overseas firms had shown interest.
“There is obviously interest among overseas companies in using the quest as a promotional vehicle here, as well as in the countries where the film of the quest will be produced,” he said.
The quest will be promoted by Network Communications, Ltd. The firm’s Christchurch director, Mr Tom Brockett, said the
competition would allow companies promotional opportunities in the three weeks before the contest, when the competitors would be filmed in New Zealand.
The competition had been held mainly in the Philippines in the past, as also in Malaysia and Singapore, he said. Previously the “Miss Asia” quest, it had been renamed to include the Pacific because it now included Pacific representatives.
