Parliamentary reporter

A Christchurch business consultant and lecturer, Miss Diana Shand, will be appointed a special Women’s Rights Commissioner to the Human Rights Commission next year, the Minister of Justice, Mr McLay, announced yesterday.

Miss Shand’s appointment would enable more effective steps to be taken to achieve equality of opportunity for women, said Mr McLay. He said Miss Shand had an impressive background in public speaking, research, interviewing and writing. Such experience would ensure her new position would be widely welcomed, he believed.

Miss Shand was appointed for a three-year term as a Human Rights Commissioner last December. She was educated in Hawke’s Bay and the United States

before graduating from the University of Canterbury in 1967. After a period of overseas study in commerce and business administration, she attended the School of Finance and Banking at the London Polytechnic. She is a lecturer in business administration and an associate member of the New Zealand Institute of Management.
