Users of dump road to be watched
A litter officer will soon be appointed to keep an eye on litterers on the streets leading to one of Christchurch’s refuse stations.
The Christchurch Metropolitan Refuse Disposal Committee decided yesterday to either appoint a parttime officer or contract a security firm to supply the necessary surveillance.
With the increased traffic to the western transfer station in Parkhouse Road, Sockbum, and the longer
distances users had to travel, there was a greater risk of loads becoming insecure and rubbish falling on the streets, said Mr A. C. Vogan, the project engineer. The problem was most notable at the week-ends.
People arriving at the station with insecure loads were issued with a card reminding them of their obligations under the traffic regulations, but by then littering had usually occurred.
Arterial routes
Members of the committee expressed concern about the effect transfer vehicle traffic to and from Christchurch’s proposed landfill site at Waimairi Beach would have on surrounding streets.
Although the Planning Tribunal had made it a condition of approval that the only access to the landfill, was via Marshland Road from its junction with Briggs Road, it had not
determined the routes by which vehicles should reach that junction. The committee had had a number of telephone calls and letters from people concerned about this. Routes from each station have not yet been finalised. All roads must be Class I because of axle loading, and may be used by heavy vehicles as of right. The committee decided that initially, all routes taken by council vehicles to the landfill sites should be
along designated arterial roads. Mr Vogan said that traffic flow to the landfill site was expected to be about three vehicles an hour. Open days When the Ruru Road eastern transfer station at Bromley opens in August the public will be treated to a couple of open days. The committee decided to forgo a formal opening ceremony for the station in favour of the open days.
