Assurances given on police proposals
By MICHAEL HANNAH in Wellington
The Labour Party has said it favours early retirement and optional disengagement by the police to make more police available for front line duties.
The Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Mr Palmer, said yesterday that Labour had had discussions with the Police Association over a considerable period on the need to have a full comple-
ment of police fit for frontline duties.
Mr Palmer gave an assurance that if the present Government brought its discussions with the police to a conclusion before the election on July 14, Labour would honour a commitment made by the Government. If the negotiations were not completed, Labour would complete them promptly on becoming the government. “This issue has been
around for years and it is time it was brought to a conclusion,” he said.
Early retirement and optional disengagement would add to the efficiency of the police, making more police available for ordinary policing duties. “The scheme will provide an opportunity to rejuvenate the police and make some realistic response to stress which police work necessarily involves,” said Mr Palmer.
