Police ‘rubbish’ N.Z.P. policy

PA Tauranga The Police Association yesterday described as “absolute rubbish” a call by the New Zealand Party’s leader, Mr Bob Jones, to “hammer” criminals. Requiring criminals to make restitution payment to victims and increasing penalties was part of the party’s law and order policy issued by Mr Jones at a party rally in Tauranga on Thursday evening. The policy would also prevent criminals from declaring themselves bankrupt in an attempt to opt out from paying restitution.

The association’s secre-

tary, Dr Bob Moodie, said the policy would only toughen some hardened criminals.

“As a result, a criminal would beat us up today and' murder us tomorrow,” he’

said. The association favoured a small step down the road to compensating the victims “but Mr Jones has a tendency to take some things too far,” he said. “He is talking about punishment which is irrational. "The association favours establishment of a commission to investigate the issue of restitution payments.”
