Socred’s mining policy
By

Social Credit has said that if elected it would set up a Government-funded Minerals Corporation to oversee mining in New Zealand. Mining rights would not be let to foreign interests unless their involvement could be proved to be of advantage to New Zealand. Where it was approved, the financial advantage
would have to be secured to New Zealand and effective restrictions placed on remittances abroad, the party said.
A Mining Court would be established which, with the Planning Tribunal, would deal with mining right applications. A licence to prospect would not confer automatically the right to mine. Social Credit said the mining legislation would be
subordinate to a conservation code. This would form a body of environmental law, enforced by the Minister of Justice, and all exploitive ventures would be subject to it. This code would set up procedures which local bodies, miners, and others would have to follow. A system of environmental zoning would be set up for land and territorial waters.
