Mr Couch rejects reports
PA Auckland The Minister of Police, Mr Couch, says he has not had to take any sick leave because of his diabetes since it was diagnosed in 1979. He rejected newspaper reports that his illness had caused him to take regular sick leave. “I go to the doctor every month for prescriptions but I do that in my own time,” he said. Mr Couch said he had spent a week in hospital when his condition was diagnosed to have his blood levels checked and the illness stabilised. “Even that was when the House wasn’t sitting,” he said.
He had probably spent more time in the House than any other member of Parliament.
Many people did not understand what diabetes was and that sufferers could lead normal lives as long as they had regular insulin. Mr Couch said his only other illness was when he got Bell’s palsy about six months ago. The condition caused temporary paralysis of the muscles on one side of the face.
