Four sentenced
PA Wellington Rape of a girl, aged 16, resulted in prison terms of between 18 months and four years for four men, who appeared in the High Court at Wellington yesterday. They were each convicted of rape, attempted rape and indecent assault at Masterton on December 11. They were Thomas Mark Brookes, aged 20, Mark
Christopher Haustein, aged 22, Barry Christopher Long, aged 19, and Marque Joseph Binns, aged 18, all of Masterton. Mr Justice Savage said that Brookes was the ring
leader and main offender. Brookes was jailed for four years for rape, to be served cumulatively with an 18month term he is serving for drug offences. Concurrent terms of three years for indecent assault and two years for attempted rape were also imposed. Haustein was sentenced to 2¥z years for the three offences. His Honour said that the roles of Long and Binns were of aiders and abettors because they helped to hold the complainant down. Each was sentenced to 18 months jail.
