Samoan ship out of Forum Line

NZPA correspondent Apia Western Samoa’s Government is withdrawing its ship Forum Samoa from the Pacific Forum Line (P.F.L.). The Minister of Civil Aviation and Shipping, Lauofo Meti, said yesterday that the Government had already sounded out three shipping companies to see if they wanted to charter the ship. Lauofo said the move was brought about by the low rates offered by the P.F.L.

He said that the P.F.L.’s chairman, Sir Harry Julian, had “unilaterally” proposed the charter rate for the Forum Samoa be dropped from ?USSIBO to SUS3OOO a day from January 1.

“This does not cover our operation cost,” Lauofo said. He said he had written to Sir Harry that his Government could not accept the new rate and said his Government would continue to charge the P.F.L. at the old rate.

Lauofo said the shipping company was “heading into financial problems.”
