Cabinet holds fate of Waitutu

The last hope of reaching a deal to save the Waitutu forest rests on a Cabinet meeting in Wellington on Monday. The Maori owners of the forest plan to have it milled by a Southland subsidiary of the Feltex Group. After the Planning Tribunal had confirmed the legality of the millers’ driving through State forest to reach the Waitutu forest block, an approach was made direct to the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon.
He was approached by both the Joint Campaign on Native Forests to save Waitutu and also by Feltex, which has indicated a willingness to reach a deal.
While in Dunedin earlier this week, Sir Robert had a meeting with Mrs Koha Murdoch, chairman of the Waitutu Maori Corporation. He also received an official report this week. Waitutu is the last substantial block of coastal native forest in Southland, and also an important refuge for a native bird now on the endangered list, the yellowhead.
Previous efforts to reach a compromise have foundered on the wish of the Waitutu Incorporation which wants to gain some financial return on the land it was given at the turn of the century as a sop for other land taken from local Maoris.
