Slump in soccer fortunes

NZPA-Reuter Paris West Germany’s defence of the European soccer championship ended dramatically in the Parc des Princes this week, and for the world’s most consistently successful soccer nation in recent years an uncertain future awaits it.

The Germans, world champions in 1974 and European champions in 1972 and 1980, succumbed 1-0 to Spain when Antonio Maceda scored in the dying moments. It was a result that, when combined with Portugal’s 1-0 victory over Rumania, left West Germany languishing in third place in

the final group two standings. Spain, as winner of the section, advances to a semi-final meeting with Denmark in Lyons tomorrow. In the other semi-final today the host nation, France, now more firmly entrenched as favourite, will play Portugal in Marseilles.
