Volleyball titles decided
The Skellerup men’s and women’s teams have won the 1984 South Island volleyball league. Both teams are in unassailable positions with two rounds to play. The Skellerup men clinched their title with a win against Teachers’-Shirley Old Boys in four sets. Earlier they beat Cashmere Old Boys in three sets. Cashmere caused a minor upset when it beat Canterbury" University B in three sets. The Otago University women’s team had a good win in three sets against the second placed team, Smash. Serving errors were costly for Smash which could not establish its attacks. After losing the first two sets against Teachers’-Shirley Old Boys, Canterbury University women fought back well
to win the next two sets, but lost a thrilling fifth set, 15-17. Results: Men Skellerup beat C. 0.8. 3-0 (156, 15-13, 15-7), beat T. 5.0.8. 3-1 (15-8, 9-15, 15-13, 15-8); T. 5.0.8. beat C.U. 3-0 (15-0, 15-12, 15-2); C. 0.8. beat C.U. 3-0 (15-12, 15-1, 15-11); Otago University beat Smash 3-2 (15-4, 11-15, 15-10, 715, 15-11); Flint-Kings beat Scorpions 3-0 (15-2, 15-6, 15-4), beat Smash 3-0 (15-12, 15-8, 158); Scorpions beat O.U. 3-2 (1511, 10-15, 15-13, 8-15, 15-12). Women Skellerup beat C. 0.8. 3-0 (155, 15-1, 15-4), beat T. 5.0.8. 3-0 (15-3, 15-4, 15-3); C. 0.8. beat C.U. 3-0 (15-11, 15-9, 15-2); T. 5.0.8. beat C.U. 3-2 (15-13, 15-5, 9-15, 15-17, 17-15); O.U. beat Smash 3-0 (15-6, 16-14, 1510); Smash beat Scorpions 3-0 (15-8, 15-3, 15-5).
