Coast Guard to move

The Canterbury Volunteer Coast Guard Service is seeking a new site for its headquarters at Lyttelton. It is being forced to move from its present site at the low-level breastwork near the No. 7 wharf because the area has been earmarked for development by the Lyttelton Harbour Board. The president of the Coast Guard Service, Mr Graeme Stewart, said negotiations were being held with the harbourmaster, Captain J. A. Barbour, and the board, for a suitable new location. The service originally agreed to the lease of the building in 1980 with the understanding that it would need to move. Tenders were recently called for the demolition of part of the No. 7 transit shed. The service’s occupation of the site is now limited. Mr Stewart said several sites had been considered and the service planned to move its building on to the new site at the port when details had been finalised. The move would probably take place before the start of the summer sailing season. The board’s redevelopment involves clearing a large area adjacent to the No. 7 wharf to increase its heavy duty cargo assembly space. Other buildings in the area will also have to be removed, including the ice-plant, fish chiller, and small fish freezer belonging to Feron Seafoods, Ltd. The company’s engineer, Mr Trevor Jackson, said negotiations were under way with the board to resite the plant. ARRIVALS Spirit of Free Enterprise (8 a.m.), 1204, Wellington (Pacifica).
