Miners trapped
NZPA-Reuter Taipei At least two Taiwanese miners were killed and 69 others are still trapped hundreds of metres below ground after an explosion at a coalmine south of Taipei. A police spokesman said that frantic rescue work to save the 69 trapped miners
was continuing in extremely difficult conditions caused by a narrow shaft and dense smoke. The explosion, believed by rescue workers to have been caused by a methane gas leak, occurred on Wednesday at the Haishan coalmine, 1150 metres below ground.
