Midwinter message

The winter inhabitants of all stations in Antarctica were urged to take pride in their work in a midwinter message sent yesterday from President Reagan, of the United States. Mr Reagan reminded the winter inhabitants that Paul Siple, the first station science leader at the South

Pole had written that winter in Antarctica was like being fired off in a rocket to

take up life on another planet. Those words reminded him of all those people who were working through the long, dark austral night to bring back knowledge and experience that would benefit everyone, Mr Reagan said.

“As you celebrate the mid-point of the austral winter you can take pride in

your work in maintaining the tradition of peaceful and co-operative scientific inquiry that has been synonymous with Antarctic research for more than two decades,” Mr Reagan said.

“Your dedication and courage are an inspiration to us all. On this midwinter day, 1984, I send my best wishes for continued success and safe return to homes and families.”
