Stolen stamps found in museum
A Christchurch philatelist whose $25,000 stamp collection was stolen from his home in a burglary on Wednesday has had most of his stamps returned. Mr Gary Elliot’s collection, contained in five albums, was found at 8 a.m. yesterday on a windowsill inside the Oriental Room of the Canterbury Museum. A
small number of stamps were missing, including some valuable items.
Having read about the theft from Mr Elliot’s home in St Martins, staff at the museum informed the police. Detective Stuart Gray, of the Christchurch C. 1.8., said the police were following a strong line of inquiry into
the culprit’s identity.
Mr Elliot said he was “quite relieved” to get the stamps back, but did not hold out much hope of recovering the rest. “I would say he took out the ones he wanted and got rid of the rest. I am very pleased they were not thrown into the river or burnt,” he said.
