Strike continuing
A strike at Skellerup Footwear, Ltd, in Christchurch is continuing today.
Production at five Skellerup factories stopped on June 15 when the workers sent on strike over the group’s hiring policy. Rubber workers, drivers, stationary engine drivers, and some other groups returned to work on June 20, but 350 footwear workers at Skellerupt Footwear decided to continue on strike. The secretary of the Canterbury Footwear Workers’ Union, Mr R. E. Jordan, said that the workers had voted at a meeting on June 20 to reaffirm an earlier
decision to stay on strike until the company had signed an agreement over
staff transfers within the factory and over rehiring staff. The workers also want any threat of suspension lifted. Informal talks are continuing between the union and management over the issues. The other workers, who had also been on strike over the Skellerup group’s hiring policy, returned to work pending further talks between management and unions, said the secretary of the Canterbury Rubber Workers’ Union, Mr Roger Brott.
