Simpson qualifies
The New Zealand Davis Cup tennis player, Russell Simpson, ensured a place at Wimbledon by winning his third-round qualifying match at Roehampton yesterday. Simpson beat Sashi Menon, of India, 4-6, 3-6, 7-6. 6-0, 6-4. However, another New Zealander, David Mustard, was not so lucky. He lost a second round match to an American, B. Kleege,
4-6 in the deciding set. ©At Eastbourne, the world’s top women players, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert-Lloyd, moved towards another final showdown when they easily qualified for the quarterfinals. Navratilova beat the Canadian 16-year-old Carling Bassett, 6-1, 6-3 and Evert-Lloyd beat Laura Arraya, of Peru, 6-4, 6-1.
