New potato chairman
Mr Colin McDonald, managing director of Alex McDonald Merchants, Ltd, Christchurch, has been appointed chairman of the New Zealand Potato Board. He replaces Mr Lex Wilcox, a Pukekohe grower, who did not seek re-election after three years in the office.
Mr McDonald, the New Zealand Agricultural Merchants representative on the board, said active promotion of the potato would be a number one priority for the industry this year. The board has just approved a $lOO,OOO television, radio and in-store campaign which would get underway in June, he said, in an effort to ensure the potato maintained its market share against competition such as rice and pasta.
Mr McDonald said the Potato Board would also continue to press (Government for legislation empowering the compulsory
identification of all lines of potatoes at the point of retail sale. “While Caucus has frustrated us in our efforts to date we intend to keep pushing this issue as we believe it is the best means of ensuring a better quality consumer product.”
