Education and inequality
Sir,—The key to education success is not money, but parents who give youngsters their time, encouragement, and help, and by these actions pass on the attitude that a good education is worth sacrifice and effort. Of course a quiet, warm room, plenty of books, and private lessons help, but there are alternatives. Some parents take their children to the library, read with them, and even turn off television to sit beside young ones
and encourage them with their homework. It may be that many parents with such attitudes have prospered in their own jobs, but this gives no grounds to infer that wealth is the cause of their children’s success. — Yours, etc., C. SPAIN. June 20, 1984.
