Forest exports

Sir,— Again J. R. O’Regan belathe poor under-privileged Coaster theme, demanding more State forest for farms (“The Press,” June 19). Yet farmland in Inangahua. County is producing at only half itfk capacity. Even the

West Coast United Council’s proposal to clear 2000 ha of forest acknowledges that intensification of private land use “is generally the quickest and cheapest form of increasing production ... However, a significant constraint ... is motivation. A proportion of the present owners . . . have no desire to intensify or develop their farms.” Mr O’Regan should motivate these owners rather than demand public money for more uneconomic farm development. The Wildlife Service and D.S.I.R. have ranked the forest as high risk, and have recommended that it should be preserved. Its clearance would kill about 20,000 protected birds. This destructive project is indefensible, given the more viable alternative to satisfy the same regional social aims. — Yours, etc.,

P. S. GRANT. June 20, 1984.
