Ferry service honoured
The chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, Mr George Wright (standing), presents a silver salver to the chairman of Pacifica Shipping Company, Ltd, Mr Brooke McKenzie, at a special function held yesterday to mark the first year of trading by the interisland ferry Spirit of Free Enterprise. The presentation was held at the board’s Christchurch
office after its June meeting. Mr Wright told board members and representatives of Pacifica Shipping that the board appreciated the reliability of the service provided by the Spirit of Free Enterprise. “The service is important to us,” Mr Wright said. “You just have to look at the Wellington to
Lyttelton figures which have increased to 250,000 tonnes for the year, largely attributable to Pacifica.”
According to Harbour Board figures, the vessel now bandies about 10 per cent of the port’s yearly tonnage. The Spirit of Free Enterprise made her first voyage from Lyttelton to Wellington on May 31, 1983.
