Nearly $1M in vandalism
PA Auckland Arson and vandalism have cost the Auckland Education Board nearly $1 million already this year, a third more than at this time last year. The board says it has run out of ideas to stop the soaring crime figures. Security patrols, alarm systems and neighbourhood watch groups had been introduced, lighting had been increased and security tightened but the incidence and cost of vandalism was still rising, said the board’s northern district general
manager, Mr Michael Allen. “We have taken every measure we can think of short of having someone there 24 hours a day. I don’t know what else we can do,” Mr Allen said. In the latest attacks at the week-end fire caused $250,000 damage to two technical training classrooms at Mangere’s Arahunga Intermediate School, and another blaze severely damaged a portable classroom at Edmund Hillary Primary at Papakura.
