Siamese twin calves stillborn

“Very rare” Siamese twin calves were born on a farm in Marshland Road on Monday evening. The calves, which were stillborn, were joined at the pelvis. They were delivered by caesarean section by the farmer, Mr Alan Clapshaw, and a Christchurch veterinarian. The cow was a Frie-sian-Hereford cross and the bull was a Murray Grey. A spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture said Siamese twin calves were unusual as they did not normally survive until birth. They would usually die early in gestation, he said. Mr Clapshaw said that the cow had been in labour all day and he thought that the calves had been alive until “near the finish.”
