Lonely hearts being conned?
NZPA-AAP Adelaide
An investigation is being held into lonely hearts clubs in South Australia after allegations that some are fronts for prostitution and that others cheat their customers.
The Attorney-General, Mr Christopher Sumner, said he had ordered the probe into introduction agencies and marriage bureaux after numerous complaints from the public. The Consumer Affairs Commissioner, Mr Michael Noblet, first outlined the problem in his annual report and has been asked to make a more detailed investigation. Mr Noblet said in his report that some agencies advertised non-existent clients to attract new members and charged exorbitant fees for virtually no service. Mr Sumner said lonely people genuinely looking for a partner were particularly susceptible to exploitation by unscrupulous persons. “The Consumer Affairs Department has received a lot of queries about the agencies, and complaints are still coming in,” said Mr Sumner.
“I thought the best thing to do was order an investigation to find out exactly what is going on.”
