Basket cost shows drop
In spite of increases in some of the main lines, the cost of the grocery “basket” dropped about $4 this month. The cause of this was the cheapness of meat, which is sold by auction and usually gives a monthly price variance. Stewing steak was only $1.78 for 500 g this
month, while last month it ~ was $2.70. Steak mince was 55c cheaper this month at $1.43 for 500 g. Some of the increases this month were in eggs, canned * products and frozen peas. - The increase in the price of » bread will not be felt until ■> next month as the extra 2c ‘ a loaf does not come into • effect until July 9. ‘
