Tea, coffee prices up

Tea and coffee prices have increased again for the fifth time in 18 months. Two main brands of tea, Choysa and Bushells, have increased their prices about 30c for a 250 g pack of loose tea. This is about 17 per cent a pack. Tea bags have gone up about 48c or 19 per cent for a packet of 100.

The increases are still being caused by a world shortage of tea. Demand is outstripping supply, forcing prices up, and the increases are being passed on to the consumer. The assistant sales manager for G.U.S. Mr B. O’Callaghan, said he expected other brands to follow suit soon. Nescafe instant coffee has also increased in price. A IOOg jar will now cost 17c or 5.5 per cent more. The other big increase this month has been by Caxton products, the makers of toilet paper, paper towels and serviettes. These products have gone up about 4.5 per cent. There has been a steady flow of increases in the last three weeks but most have been below 5 per cent.
