Amici concert

The Amici Chamber Orchestra will open its season later than usual this year following the return from overseas of its director, John Pattinson. The programme for its concert on Sunday combines relatively old and new works, seeking to introduce to Christchurch audiences some unfamiliar music. Between Mozart’s satirical “Musical Joke” divertimento and Haydn’s mature Symphony No. 84 are three

twentieth century English works, Gustav Host’s everpopular “St Paul’s Suite” for strings, Malcolm Arnold’s sparkling Sinfonietta No. 2 and Edmund Rubbra’s reflective “Improvisations on Virginal Themes by Giles Farnaby.” Farnaby, who lived from about 1560 to 1600 contributed 50 or so pieces to the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book.

The concert will start at 8 p.m. in the Great Hall at the Arts Centre.
