New Rangiora nominee
A second name has been put forward for selection as the new National Party candidate for Rangiora. An Ashley Gorge farmer and vice-chairman of the Rangiora electorate committee, Mr Robert Johnston, said last evening that his name would be put forward for nomination today. Earlier, the National Party vice-president and Canterbury-Westland divisional chairman, Mr
Jim Gerard, of Cheviot, was nominated. A selection meeting would be held at the Waipara Hall this evening, said the chairman of the electorate committee, Mrs Isla McFadden. Mrs McFadden would not say, however, if any more names had been put forward.
Mr Johnston has been a member of the National Party since 1957 and was
elected vice-chairman of the committee in March this year. He was a member of the New Zealand Meat and Wool Boards’ electoral committee from 1973 to 1975 and was a member of the board from 1975 to 1978 and from 1980 to 1983. He has also represented the board on the International Wool Secretariat for four years. Mr Johnston is married, with three children.
