Player reprimanded

N. Robb, a Christchurch second grade rugby player, was given a severe reprimand when he appeared before the Canterbury Rugby Union’s judicial committee last evening. Robb was sent off on May 8 for what the referee considered to be an attempted eye gouge of a Marist player. However, Robb disputed the referee’s report when the case was first heard and it was held over for further investigation.

The judicial chairman, Mr Benj Drake, said that there was a substantial difference between the stories given by the referee and the player, and there was also some doubt whether Robb was the player who had made the gouging attempt. For these reasons, and because the player had had to wait so long for the matter to be finalised he would be let off with a severe reprimand.
