Cyanide drums spill
NZPA-AAP Port Moresby Papua New Guinea was trying yesterday to prevent loss of life and a threat to fisheries from thousands of
kilograms of cyanide spilled into the mouth of the Fly River from an OK Tedi mining barge. Helicopters were being used to warn villages along the Gulf of Papua Coast and to find 2700 100 kg drums of sodium cyanide which were
on the way to process gold at the OK Tedi mine when lost during rough seas.
The authorities at Daru on the Fly rivermouth feared for the lucrative barramundi fishery as dead fish started to wash ashore.
