Mana Motuhake looks north

Mana Motuhake will not have candidates standing in South Island electorates this year except Southern Maori.

The party’s leader, Mr Matiu Rata', said from Auckland yesterday that the party had wanted to contest more general seats in the South Island, particularly in Christchurch, where it had about 200 members. However, it had decided to concentrate on its areas of greatest strength, which were in the north.

It would have candidates in the four Maori seats and in four general electorates — Whangarei, Papatoetoe, West Auckland, and Porirua.

The party’s Southern Maori candidate is Mr Amster Reedy. Mr Rata will stand in Northern Maori, Mr Bert McLean in Eastern Maori, and Mrs Eva Rickard in Western Maori.

In 1981 the party had candidates only in the four Maori seats.
