Manawatu wins on penalties

PA Wanganui The big-kicking full-back, Mark Finlay, booted Manawatu to a fortuitous 18-14 rugby victory against Wanganui at Spriggens Park yesterday.

He kicked all of Manawatu’s points from six penalty goals in the nonchampionship clash, while Wanganui missed seven shots at goal. Manawatu led 6-4 at half-time. A more adventurous Wanganui team, missing the top backs, Bill Osborne, who was promoting his rugby book, and the half-back, Andrew Donald, ran in three tries, but only once, 12

minutes from time, did it manage to grab the lead. Wanganui lost the match because its forwards were guilty of too many clumsy infringements deep in opposition territory, and the first five-eighths Matene Love had an off-day with his goal-kicking. Scorers:

Manawatu 18 (Mark Finlay, 6 penalty goals), Wanganui 14 (Matene Love, Derek Brooks, Tasi Su’a, tries; Love a conversion).
