Yachtsman ‘safe’

PA London The New Zealand trans-At-lantic yachtsman, John Mansell, was reported to be safe and well after being rescued from his 35ft (10.67 m catamaran Double Brown. The 42-year-old Cook Strait ferry master sent out a May Day call when Double Brown began breaking up 500 miles east-south-east of Newfoundland. But within 50min he was safely aboard Jemina Nicholas, the 40ft monohull of a

fellow competitor, Wynne Thomas, after what the Falmouth coastguard reported was a copybook rescue. Neither boat had sophisticated electronic navigational instruments and it took skill by both skippers for the rescue to be accomplished so quickly, the coastguard said. Mansell will remain on board Jemina Nicholas until it reaches Newport, Rhode Island, in five to seven days. But he may not help Thomas in any way.
