Top midget kart driver extended
Bi7ce Coulbeck, who has dominated the midget class for some time, was hard pressed by Aaron Crichton, Dean Hyde and Miles Spicer at the Christchurch kart meeting at the Carrs Road raceway on Sunday. Hyde, a son of Avon Hyde, a top karter and prominent saloon car driver, provided especially strong opposition, but Coulbeck eventually emerged with top honours once again. A big field contested the 100 cu. cm class, which was won by the national champion, Murray Davies. He had top competition from Keith Hooper and Geoff Bone. Graham Stevens looked set to win the 125 cu. cm gearbox class until his kart’s gearbox blew in the final heat. That enabled Derek Wilson to take the honours in the class. The last race, the all-in handicap event, was an excellent spectacle. Thirty karts started and 19 finished. Davies, who gave the scratch drivers
two-thirds of a lap, was challenging for the lead on the twelfth and final lap, but had to settle for third at the finish.
