Coalfield uneconomic
PA Wellington Little potential exists for mining the Pukekawa coalfield in the north-west of the Waikato coal region, a Ministry of Energy survey has found. Releasing the coalfield report yesterday, the Minister of Energy, Mr Birch, said the great depth of coal seams over most of the field
meant the mining potential was low. “Unfortunately, where the seam is shallower, it was generally found to be too thin to be workable,” he said. “Coal seams at depths greater than 400 metres were not at present considered to be economically mineable,” he said.
