Engineers’ Union buys TV time
The Engineers’ Union will spend about $50,000 on television commercials in the next six months to promote a positive image of itself. It is believed to be the first time that a union in New Zealand has bought time on television.
The union’s acting secretary, Mr Rex Jones, said that the idea was to counter anti-union publicity. “Unions are a positive force in society, and they play an important role in the economy. We want to put that side of our exist-
ence across to people,” he said.
“There is an urgent need to show how we allocate our resources, and what the union does for its members, especially now that voluntary unionism is here.” Among the innovations the union has brought to its 51,000 members are a health and safety programme based in Auckland and a union-run medical benefits scheme. It is the biggest private-sector union and the biggest union affiliated to the Federation of Labour.
