Businesses critical of helipad decision
The Christchurch City Council’s recent decision to stop scenic helicopter flights from the New Brighton foreshore has been criticised by businesses in the suburb. A letter received yesterday from the New Brighton District Business Association, expressed the association’s lack of confidence in the council’s decision mak-
ing on the issue. The letter said that all opinions in the community pointed to a “great majority”. supporting the helicopter flights. It said the foreshore was “sadly lacking in activities of interest and excitement
for visitors to Christchurch.” Democracy had “taken a retrograde step” with the council’s decision to end the trial helipad and flights, the letter said. “The helicopter had proved to be an exciting extension to the holidays for visitors.” Garden City Heliflights, which ran the flights, has applied to the council for a helipad at Christchurch Airport. That idea has been supported by councillors, who said last evening that a suitable licensed area for a scenic helicopter flight service should be provided at the airport.
