Violence at pit
NZPA-PA London There were violent scenes at the Bickershaw colliery, in Lancashire, yesterday for the second successive day during the national miner’s strike.
The police said there were about 30 arrests for public order offences during incidents involving 350 pick-
eters. A coach window was reported to have been smashed as the day shift arrived at the colliery, near Leigh.
On Tuesday there were 16 arrests at the pit during scuffles. Picketing throughout the Midlands coalfields was at a low ebb, with no reports of trouble.
